9AM - 10:50 AM: An in-depth breakdown and analysis of some of the best screenplays ever written.
You have to know what works and why before you can fully realize HOW to do it yourself.

  • We will DECONSTRUCT and REASSEMBLE Academy-Award winning screenplays.
  • We’ll WATCH powerful, emotional, moving scenes.
  • We’ll PROBE what makes them work.
  • You will learn to UNLOCK their SECRETS and how to use them for your own scripts.

10:50 AM - 11 AM - BREAK

11AM - 12PM: The first thing is having a GREAT. CINEMATIC. STORY. IDEA.

  • You will learn the ELEMENTS of GREAT stories and RECOGNIZE poor, tired, and trite story ideas.
  • We’ll run through treatments, synopsis, beat sheets and outlines to uncover a story’s CINEMATIC value.
  • You will discover how STRUCTURE interrogates your STORY IDEA before you commit to success or failure.

12PM - 1:15PM - LUNCH

1PM - 2PM: Screenplays are essentially emotional CUP HOLDERS. And great dialogue is what what FILLS THEM UP to overflowing.

“Yeah, I’m talking to you!” The WRITER glances away to avoid the confrontation. “Turn around. Look at me. Straight up,” the VOICE bellows.
“Do it!” After a tense moment, the writer finally relents, locks onto the voice, to stare at the abyss of drama.

  • We’re going to WATCH authentic, sparkling, well-crafted dialogue… and also terrible ones for comparison.
  • You will learn elements of good dialogue to make your characters COME ALIVE while entertaining (and informing) the reader.
  • You are going to WRITE a page of dialogue that snaps, crackles and pops off the page, without being ON-THE-NOSE.

2PM - 3PM - Uncover the BIG SECRET of creating characters by making them BAND MEMBERS in your story.

  • You will SEE how every character must play an integral INSTRUMENT in your story, if they don’t toss them out!
  • You will LISTEN to the HARMONY of the chorus of your characters.
  • You will TOUCH the HEARTBEAT of your story, giving it the proper CADENCE and STRENGTH to keep it alive.

3PM - 3:10PM - BREAK

3:10PM - 4PM - The BUSINESS end of the CRAFT of screenwriting

During this final session, you will learn the following options for launching a screenwriting career:

  • 1. PRODUCE your scripts yourself if you have patience to earn the money.
  • 2. SELL your scripts, if you can, but face the reality of ‘asking permission’ to make a movie.
  • 3. TEACH screenwriting by writing books and lecturing at school and workshops.
  • DO ALL THREE! - A case study
